River's Can't Elope dahlia with peachy watermelon stellar bloom and twisting petals
River's Can't Elope peach and coral stellar dahlias blooming in the garden

River's Can't Elope Dahlia

River's Can't Elope is an extraordinary stellar dahlia in a shifting blend of peach, watermelon, coral, and warm pink. Long, narrow petals twist and curl away from the center, giving the flower a sense of movement—as though a breeze were constantly passing through the bloom.

The unusual form is especially beautiful paired with the color. Rather than reading as a flat orange or pink, River's Can't Elope moves between warm cantaloupe, peachy coral, and watermelon tones as the blooms mature and the light changes. It is whimsical without being fussy, and unlike almost anything else in the cutting garden.

Why We Grow It: River's Can't Elope won us over with its movement. The long, twisting petals seem to be perpetually caught in a breeze, giving every flower a wonderfully animated quality. Then there is the color—a hard-to-pin-down blend of peach, watermelon, coral, and pink that changes subtly from bloom to bloom. There are plenty of beautiful dahlias, but this is one that makes us stop and look at it every time we walk through the field.
