Bloomquist York dahlia with smoky rust-red petals and dark burgundy center

Bloomquist York Dahlia

Bloomquist York is an unusually colored dahlia in smoky shades of rust-red, burgundy, and chocolate. The petals deepen dramatically toward the center and soften toward their tips, creating an ombré effect that gives each bloom the appearance of an antique, hand-painted flower.

Although classified as a formal decorative, the 4–6 inch blooms often have a looser, more irregular character, with twisting petals that accentuate their rich color and give them wonderful movement. Exceptionally tall plants carry the flowers on long stems, making Bloomquist York as striking in arrangements as it is towering over the late-summer garden.

Why We Grow It: Bloomquist York is unlike any other red dahlia we grow. Its color is difficult to describe—and that's exactly what we love about it. Somewhere between rusty red, burgundy, and chocolate, the petals deepen toward the center and seem to change with the light. The slightly unruly blooms only add to its character. And then there is the plant itself: tall, vigorous, and impossible to overlook in the garden. We grow York for that wonderfully unusual color and for the depth it brings to late-summer and autumn arrangements.
